Rubrics that are used to assess student work

Students and Families should know how they arrive at the grade that they receive.  Even more so, when doing an assignment, everyone should know how to do well, what is expected.  Students in my classes know how to assess themselves and so are rarely surprised with lower grades from me.

In most cases, the students have less tolerance for imperfections than the rubric does.  Many students have a hard time saying for themselves that they earned a 3.  They feel uncomfortable saying that they did a great job.

It's my expectation that students are aware of their level of success and are able to determine what their next step should be to work towards improvement.  Students are empowered.
