Winter 2007 ASAP Classes:

 

Acting Out: Do you like to act? Create sets and costumes for plays? In this class we will read several good stories and pick one to turn into a play. 1st, and 2nd grades on Thursdays; 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Tuesdays. Both with Wendy Darst. ?

Bookworms: Learn to write and illustrate your own books with your own stories. We will use art, writing and reading to get excited about all books. 2nd and 3rd grades on Wednesdays; 1st grade on Thursday. Both with Jessica Kitzman. ?

Camp fire Club Waiting List: Our Camp Fire Club is full, but you may sign up for the waiting list in case someone drops out and opens up a spot. 1st and 2nd grades on Tuesdays.

Chess Club: Sharpen your mind by learning how to play chess and other strategy games. 4th and 5th grades. Tuesdays with Phil Schwartzberg.

Creative Clay: If you like to play with clay, this is the class for you. We will learn several techniques for creating with clay, including pinch pots, modeling, coil-building and slab-building. We will see out creations go from our imaginations to the kiln as we learn where clay comes from and it’s role throughout history and our everyday lives. 1st and 2nd grades. Mondays with Joshua Cook.

Great Civilizations: Learn about the beginnings of writing and math and some of the Great Civilizations of the past all while practicing reading, writing and math and making cool art displays. We will learn Origami, too. 1st and 2nd grades on Thursdays; 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Mondays. Both with Maria Singh. ?

Hip HOp Dance: Dance, move and have fun learning Hip Hop moves from a professional dancer. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Wednesdays with Edna Stevens Talton.

JumpStart PM: All the fun and learning of our very popular morning JumpStart program, now available in the convenient afternoon time. 1st, and 2nd grades on Tuesdays; 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Thursdays. Both with John Zimmerman and Warsame Warsame. ?

Language of Art: We will explore the world of art as we create stories and learn about our world. Be prepared for a fun, creative and messy time. 4th and 5th grades. Wednesdays with Amanda Hane. ?

Latin Dance: Latin Dance is a wonderful way to expose our youth to cultural diversity. This class will focus on the basic steps in salsa/mambo, cha cha, merengue and rhumba. Students will learn how to single and partner dance with emphasis on proper hand positions. This class is a fun way to enrich the kids’ knowledge through creative arts. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays with Edna Stevens Talton.

Mask Making: We will take ordinary denim, beads and other decorative materials and turn them into very personal three-dimensional masks. Our student artists will develop skills in design and collaboration as they create very personal keepsakes that they will want to hang on to for years to come. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Wednesdays with professional artist Dee Henry Williams.

Skillbuilding the Fun Way: We will work on building the skills needed for the MCA tests by playing games and enjoying hands-on activities. 3rd and 4th grades. Tuesdays with Sandi Sevre. ?

Spanish Through Flamenco: Clap your hands and stomp your feet to the Gypsy rhythms of Spain! Learn Spanish while dancing Flamenco with a famous Flamenco dancer. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Tuesdays with Colette Illarde.

Soccer Fundamentals: Come and get your kicks while you learn the rules and the skills needed to play soccer. We will mix in a few other games as well. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Mondays; 1st and 2nd grades on Wednesdays. Both with Peter Yamashiro.

Somali Club: We will learn about Somali and other African cultures through dance, art, reading and food. We will also make sure that our homework is finished and we will practice our reading, math and writing. This class is for recent immigrants from Africa and those who want to learn more about African cultures. 1st and 2nd grades on Mondays; 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Wednesdays. Both with Warsame Warsame and Sandi Sevre. ?

Student Leadership: Our Student Leadership class, a part of the district’s Everyday Leaders initiative, offers leadership training and service opportunities to students at Whittier International. Student Leaders will work on personal development and community service. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays and Wednesdays with John Zimmerman. Students may sign up for one day or two.

Warm Fuzzies: Lots of relaxing and fun activities will help us to learn to understand our feelings, handle stress, resolve conflicts and make new friends. 2nd and 3rd grades. Mondays with Amanda Hane.

Winter Visual Arts: Develop your artistic side while creating really cool pieces of art that you will be able to see with your eyes. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Tuesdays; 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Thursdays. Both with Pearl Madryga.

World Art: Each week we will explore a different style of art coming from all over the globe. Create projects based on what we learn, ranging from splatter painting and “found” art sculptures to deciphering hieroglyphics. Be prepared to be messy, creative and to have fun. 4th and 5th grades on Mondays with Roxie Speth and Meredith Keller.
