Purpose:
Comparisons of the 2006 MCA-II reading and math performance between participants in the after-school programs provided by the 21st Century community education learning sites versus non-participants.

Subjects:
The subjects contain participants and non-participants who continuously enrolled at a 21st Century community education learning site in the school year 2005-06 and took the MCA-II tests in Spring 2006.
Groups:
Subjects were categorized into three groups:
(1) Non-participants who attended no ASAP or JumpStart classes.
(2) Non-Regular Participants attended ASAP or JumpStart classes less than 30 days.
(3) Regular Participants attended ASAP or JumpStart classes 30 days or more.
Data Analyses:
Using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to compare the percent of students who met the proficiency benchmarks on the 2006 MCA-II reading (see sidebar -- READING) and math (see sidebar -- MATH) among regular participants, non-regular participants, and non-participants for cohort 1.
Results and Discussion:
Overall, regular participants had significantly higher reading and math performance than non-participants.
Regular participants had significantly higher math performance than non-regular participants.
Overall, regular participants had significantly higher reading and math performance than non-participants. The findings were site-specific, indicating that regular participants had significantly higher reading and math performance than non-participants at some specific sites ONLY. (Note: Whittier International was one of the sites with significantly higher reading and math performance.)

A recent analysis of test scores by the Research, Evaluation and Assessment (REA) Department of MPS shows that students who attend after school programs at 21st Century Learning Centers (like Whittier Community Education's center at Whittier International -- IB World School) do better in both reading and math.
