The only regular required homework I ask students to complete includes:
1) The work they do not complete in class that needs to get done
2) A minimum of 20 minutes of reading per night
I think of the second item as more fun than work, however, and I think the kids will come to agree! Students do not need to keep a daily reading log or get signatures at home. My goal is for the kids to develop a love of reading and to not think of it as a burden or another task to check off a list.
Occasionally, I will send a project home that students may need some extra support with (for example, interviewing a family member, bringing in an object from home to share with the class, etc.).
I also send home packets during long breaks that students can work on to ensure they maintain their learning. I tell students these are required, but you can always use your discretion as to whether or not this is something you want your child to complete.
Every Monday, I will send home additional optional work for students who ask. If you want additional homework for your child, please let me know.
I send home minimal homework because research shows that in elementary school, homework is not beneficial. This time is better spent reading, playing, and spending time talking and enjoying the company of family. If you need any recommendations of educational family activities, please let me know and I’d be happy to pass these on!
