Class offerings for the Winter Quarter 2004--2005

 


African Dance & Rhythm: What is life without music? Use creative movement to explore music and dance from West Africa. Students will play instruments and learn traditional dances. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Tuesdays and Thursdays with Francis Kofi and Felicia Adeti.



Basketball Fundamentals: Learn the rules of the game and develop the fundamental skills needed to play basketball with an experienced and certified coach. 4th and 5th grades. Thursdays with Thomas Stockhaus.



Craft Club: If you like arts and crafts, then this is the class for you. We will make a variety of art projects and crafts. Students will develop socially and artistically, as well as improve their reading and writing skills. 4th and 5th grades. Wednesdays with Jenny Lock and Marleen Stubee.



Hip Hop Dance: Dance, move and have fun with professional dancer Leah Nelson as she teaches Hip Hop Dance and more. Fourth and fifth graders will also practice spoken word/rap poetry. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Monday: 4th and 5th grades on Wednesdays. Both with Leah Nelson.



Homework ā€™nā€™ Hoops: Each child will sit with a tutor for help with their homework and to build their academic skills by playing language and math board games or by working on the computer. The tutors are well-trained and supervised at all times in a structured setting. After an hour of study, the students and tutors play recreational games in the gym and game room. Sign up for one day per week. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Bethlehem Community Center. ?



Hooked on Yoga: We will learn Yoga, a great way to great health. Yoga is simple, easy and anyone can do it to improve their strength, flexibility, balance, concentration and benefit their heart and lungs. We will also learn to hook rugs and do beading. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Thursdays with Daphne Bodene.



Making News: Are you interested in journalism? We will explore what goes into publishing a newsletter or magazine. All the students will work together to write stories and produce their own publication. 4th and 5th grades. Mondays with Dunya Cope. ?



Making Your Mark: Who are you and how are you a part of Minneapolis? This class will help you explore yourself and your community. We will inquire, communicate effectively and flex our leadership muscles as we learn about our city. We will finish by painting a mural. Come and make your mark. 4th and 5th grades. Mondays with Melia Sailiata and Andreal Dronen.



Math Practice: We will concentrate on improving the math skills of the students by using curricula supplied by the Minneapolis School District. Sign up for one day per week. 2nd and 3rd grades on Wednesdays and Thursdays; 4th and 5th grades on Mondays and Tuesdays. All with Maria Singh. ?



Peace Builders: Come be inspired! We will learn about the peaceful heroes of our world so that we can find peace in our own lives. We will get to know some peaceful role models including Dr. Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa by reading stories, playing games, singing songs and just talking. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. Wednesdays with Dunya Cope.



Science Fiction for Little Monsters: Get to know your favorite science fiction monsters, aliens and mutants by reading and writing science fiction stories and by doing math and science. Sign up for one day per week. 2nd and 3rd grades. Monday and Tuesday with Henry Hubben. ?



TaeKwonDo: Taekwondo is the ancient Korean art of self-defense using hands and feet. Classes stress total fitness, balance, coordination, concentration, respect, discipline, confidence, self-defense and fun. Students will acquire the basic skills necessary to achieve these qualities and more, including leadership. Classes are taught by an instructor certified by the North American Taekwondo Federation and students need no prior experience. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays and Tuesdays with Kathy Hartley.



The Math, the Merrier: Have fun in this exciting class while we practice our math skills by playing games and sports and by making cool arts and crafts. 1st grade. Wednesdays with Amanda Hane. ?



Visual Arts: Bookmaking, printing and stamping for the youngest; masks, collages, murals and sculpture for the older kids. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Pearl Madryga; 4th and 5th grades on Mondays and Wednesdays with Victor Yepez.
