Class offerings for Spring Quarter 2005

 

African Dance & Rhythm: What is life without music? Use creative movement to explore music and dance from West Africa. Students will play instruments and learn traditional dances. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Tuesdays and Thursdays with Francis Kofi and Felicia Adeti.

Basketball Fundamentals: Learn the rules of the game and develop the fundamental skills needed to play basketball with an experienced and certified coach. 4th and 5th grades. Thursdays with Thomas Stockhaus.

Big Woods Club: Learn about the natural world through nature study, arts and crafts, story telling, science and games while keeping your literacy skills sharp. 2nd and 3rd grades. Mondays and Tuesdays with Henry Hubben. ?

Fun with bookmaking: Learn about the different kinds of books made all over the world and then make your own! We’ll also spend time on homework and reading every week. Learn new skills, create your own beautiful works of art and have tons of fun! 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. Wednesdays with Jenny Lock. ?

Group Games: Let’s work together! Students will play cooperative games and do activities to work on class community, get along with each other, and have fun! 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. Mondays with Dunya Cope.

Hip Hop Dance: Dance, move and have fun with professional dancer Leah Nelson as she teaches Hip Hop Dance and more. Fourth and fifth graders will also practice spoken word/rap poetry. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Monday: 4th and 5th grades on Wednesdays. Both with Leah Nelson.

Homework ’n’ Hoops: Each child will sit with a tutor for help with their homework and to build their academic skills by playing language and math board games or by working on the computer. The tutors are well-trained and supervised at all times in a structured setting. After an hour of study, the students and tutors play recreational games in the gym and game room. Sign up for one day per week. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Bethlehem Community Center. ?

Hooked on Yoga: We will learn Yoga, a great way to great health. Yoga is simple, easy and anyone can do it to improve their strength, flexibility, balance, concentration and benefit their heart and lungs. We will also keep journals and learn to hook rugs. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Thursdays with Daphne Bodene. ?

Just Imagine: Give your imagination a workout while practicing reading skills and working on reading comprehension. We will also create our own books. 1st grade. Mondays with Wanda Harris. ?

Math Art Fun: We will make math fun by using arts and crafts to make math come alive as we use the math curricula supplied by the School District. Sign up for one day per week. 2nd and 3rd grades on Wednesdays and Thursdays; 4th and 5th grades on Mondays and Tuesdays. All with Maria Singh. ?

Mix it Up: This class is for students who want to mix it up in their community by performing a valuable service. Students will choose their own projects and plan the celebration party at the end of the quarter. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays with Andreal Dronen.

Ready, Set, Grow!: Do you want to grow your own food that is both delicious and nutritious? Get a head start on the Summer Program by planting seeds for veggies and herbs. Learn about gardening, nutrition and have fun. 4th and 5th grades. Mondays with Marleen Stubee. ?

Save the Earth: Learn how you can make a positive difference for our planet while having fun! Students will play games, do experiments and make art projects from recycled materials. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades. Wednesdays with Marleen Stubee and Dunya Cope.

Stepping Through Music: We’ll explore and groove our way through the history of music. Listen to all kinds of music and learn about classical, jazz, blues, folk, hip hop, R&B and more. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Wednesdays with Melia Sailiata.

Stories and Storytellers: We will explore far off lands and crazy creatures through the magic of books. We’ll build our vocabularies and improve our reading skills by reading, writing and telling stories. 1st grade. Wednesdays with Amanda Hane. ?

TaeKwonDo: Taekwondo is the ancient Korean art of self-defense using hands and feet. Classes stress total fitness, balance, coordination, concentration, respect, discipline, confidence, self-defense and fun. Students will acquire the basic skills necessary to achieve these qualities and more, including leadership. Classes are taught by an instructor certified by the North American Taekwondo Federation and students need no prior experience. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays and Tuesdays with Kathy Hartley.

The Play’s the Thing: Interested in the theater? We’ll do everything to put on a play: make a set, do make-up, costuming, directing and acting. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Thursdays with Melia Sailiata.

Visual Arts: Explore a variety of art forms in this class. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Pearl Madryga; 4th and 5th grades on Mondays and Wednesdays with Victor Yepez.
