Class offerings for the Spring Quarter 2003--2004

 


Accelerated Readers and Reading Buddies : All students will select books, practice reading and earn points to ensure reading success. Students who are good readers will also help younger students. 1st and 2nd grades and 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Mondays with Christy Botts. ?



African Dance & Rhythm :What is life without music? Use creative movement to explore music and dance from West Africa. Students will play instruments and learn traditional dances. 1st - 5th grades. Tuesdays and Wednesdays with Francis Kofi and Felicia Adeti.



Chess Club: Learn the rules and strategies of chess and other games, then just play. 1st - 5th grades. Wednesdays with Philip Schwartzberg and Shirley Williams.



Dancing with Words : Dance it! Write it! Tell it! Together we will explore three styles of dance — jazz, modern and improvisation — to encourage self-expression and to foster healthy self-worth through dance movement and poetry writing. 1st and 2nd grades. Tuesdays with Edith Gibson. ?



Do you want to be a Writer?: Do you ever wonder what a writer does all day? If I told you the first part of a story, could you finish it? We’ll learn about writers and their work. We’ll write in journals and tell stories by making cards and writing letters. All you need to bring is your imagination. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays and Tuesdays with Peter Blau. ?



Girlfriends: Join the club where you will hang out with your friends and make arts and crafts, get help with your homework and record your deepest thoughts in your own private journal. Most of all, you will have fun with your Girlfriends. 1st and 2nd grades. Mondays with Shirley Williams. ?



How Does My Garden Grow?: Learn to grow plants from seed and do science, too! Come prepared to be creative, get dirt under your nails and learn about plants. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Wednesdays with Erica Ryberg. ?



Kickball and Bookmaking: Two great activities that go great together. We’ll play kickball and we’ll make our own books. 1st and 2nd grades. Thursdays with John Zimmerman. ?



Latin Dance: Anyone with a love of music, rhythm and movement can learn basic steps of Mexican folk dances. We will practice the folk dances from Jalisco. 1st -5th grades. Mondays and Thursdays with with Yehimi Espinoza and Edgar Galvan.



Nature Girls : Learn about nature through fun activities and games in both the good indoors and in the great outdoors. 1st and 2nd grades. Wednesdays with Annie Richardson. ?



Sculpture: Learn about geometrical shapes, architectural forms, spatial sense, local plants and animals, line, color, shape, texture and balance — all while making sculpture. 1st and 2nd grades on Mondays and Tuesdays. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Wednesdays and Thursdays. All classes with Lourdes Cué.



Solo Singing : Choir members will practice singing solos and small ensemble pieces for performance. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays with Kristin Bennett.



Sowing and Growing: We’ll learn about food plants from around the world through stories and tales then grow our own plants and write our own stories. 1st and 2nd grades. Thursdays with Erica Ryberg. ?



Tennis For Beginners: Learn the basic skills of tennis in this fun class. We will practice racquet handling, forehand and backhand strokes and serving. No experience required! 1st and 2nd grades on Tuesdays. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Wednesdays. Both classes with Mary Daub.



TaeKwonDo: Taekwondo is the ancient Korean art of self-defense using hands and feet. Classes stress total fitness, balance, coordination, concentration, respect, discipline, confidence, self-defense and fun. Students will acquire the basic skills necessary to achieve these qualities and more, including leadership. Classes are taught by an instructor certified by the North American Taekwondo Federation and students need no prior experience. 1st - 5th grades. Mondays and Tuesdays with Kathy Hartley.



Whittier Globetrotters: Travel around the world without ever leaving the school! Each week we will learn about a different country and culture by exploring a variety of music, literature, language and food. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Thursdays with Sarah Reed.



World of Painting : Students will become familiar with basic painting skills and learn about color theory, composition, value, paint mixing and how to properly use a brush. There will be a variety of assignments to allow the students to demonstrate the skills they have learned. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Wednesdays with Kristin Wallner.
