Class offerings for the Fall Quarter 2004--2005

 


African Dance & Rhythm: What is life without music? Use creative movement to explore music and dance from West Africa. Students will play instruments and learn traditional dances. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Tuesdays; 4th and 5th grades on Thursdays. Both with Francis Kofi and Felicia Adeti.



Ballet and Bookmaking: Children will develop coordination and flexibility through learning the fundamentals of ballet and sharpen their writing skills by making books to record what they have learned. This is a great class for both boys and girls and no experience is necessary. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Wednesdays with Maria Fontana.



Basketball Fundamentals: Learn the rules of the game and develop the fundamental skills needed to play basketball with an experienced and certified coach. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Thursdays; 4th and 5th grades on Wednesdays. Both with Thomas Stockhaus.



Box of Chocolates: This class will emphasize academic skill building, but like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’ll get. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Mondays and Thursdays. Both with Diane Island and Bernabe Cadenas.



Digging for Treasure: Learn about the science of Archaeology as we do fun activities to find out about the Mayan, Aztec and Incan civilizations. We’ll do some drawing, some coloring, and of course, dig for buried artifacts. 2nd and 3rd grades. Wednesdays with Jenny Lock and Dunya Cope. ?



Do you want to be a Writer?: Do you ever wonder what a writer does all day? If I told you the first part of a story, could you finish it? We’ll learn about writers and their work. We’ll write in journals and tell stories, make cards and write letters. All you need to bring is your imagination. Sign up for one day per week. 2nd and 3rd grades. Mondays and Tuesdays with Peter Blau. ?



Elementary LabRats: Learn science by doing a different fun experiment every week! We will make green goo, rainbow colored paper, s’mores and much, much more. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Tuesdays; 4th and 5th grades on Mondays. Both with Erica Ryberg. ?



Hip Hop Dance: Dance, move and have fun with professional dancer Leah Nelson as she teaches Hip Hop Dance and more. 1st, 2nd, 3rd grades on Mondays; 4th and 5th grades on Wednesdays. Both with Leah Nelson.



Homework ’n’ Hoops: Each child will sit with a tutor for help with their homework and to build their academic skills by playing language and math board games or by working on the computer. The tutors are well-trained and supervised at all times in a structured setting. After an hour of study, the students and tutors play recreational games in the gym and game room. Sign up for one day per week. 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Tuesdays and Wednesdays at the Bethlehem Community Center. ?



Math Practice: Do the math. 1st and 2nd grades on Thursdays; 3rd, 4th and 5th grades on Mondays. Both with Diane Island and Bernabe Cadenas.



Passport Pals: Travel the world through games, music, dance, arts and crafts, storytelling, special guests and more! This fun and exciting class will help students build their academic skills while learning about cultures from around the world, including their own. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades Thursdays; 4th and 5th grades Mondays. Both with Melia Sailiata and Marleen Stubee. ?



Stretching and Stories: We will learn Yoga, a great way to great health. Yoga is simple, easy and anyone can do it to improve their strength, flexibility, balance, concentration and benefit their heart and lungs. We will also read myths and legends from around the world and learn Origami, the fascinating Japanese art of paper folding. 2nd and 3rd grades. Thursdays with Daphne Bodene.



TaeKwonDo: Taekwondo is the ancient Korean art of self-defense using hands and feet. Classes stress total fitness, balance, coordination, concentration, respect, discipline, confidence, self-defense and fun. Students will acquire the basic skills necessary to achieve these qualities and more, including leadership. Classes are taught by an instructor certified by the North American Taekwondo Federation and students need no prior experience. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays and Tuesdays with Kathy Hartley.



Theater Play: Learn to be an actor and develop your speaking and performing skills. Students will stretch their imaginations by playing fun improvisational games and build confidence and creativity while learning stage warm-ups, games and writing their own skits. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Mondays with Dunya Cope.



The Math, the Merrier: Have fun in this exciting class while we practice our math skills by playing games and sports, and by making cool arts and crafts. 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Thursdays with Amanda Hane. ?



Visual Arts: Bookmaking, printing and stamping for the youngest; masks, collages, murals and sculpture for the older kids. Sign up for one day per week. 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Pearl Madryga; 4th and 5th grades on Mondays and Wednesdays with Victor Yepez.
